Fearless Talents

A YEAR AGO on this date, I was in M’s school to watch a talent show. M took part in it for the first time. Together with four of her friends – a lead singer, three back-up singers and she the sole guitarist – they performed Taylor Swift’s Fearless.

I was almost afraid for her, afraid she’d embarrass herself in front of the whole school as she had only picked up guitar LESS than two months before she went on stage to perform, in front of an audience and in front of judges (which included the school principal, songtress Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and actress Koe Yeet).

I must add that M does not have formal guitar lessons and merely picked it up out of interest, AND out of her love for Taylor Swift. She first learnt the basics from her friend during lunch breaks in school back in April 2012, got her own guitar in May 2012 (and practised fervently) and by June 2012, she was brave enough to perform for an audience.

Although her group didn’t win (the lead singer, Intan, went on to win the third place for her solo singing), I salute her for her confidence and courage. The song summed it up, she was FEARLESS.

Postscript:

This year, once again M took part in the school talent show held on 18th June 2013. She paired up with Intan once again and did another Taylor Swift’s number The Lucky One.  Judging this time was done by the audience via sms vote. While they weren’t the “lucky ones” to win, still they had a good time!
